A LITTLE ABOUT ME
I’m an artist and designer living on a small island in Rhode Island with my husband and our bloodhound, Moose.
Life here keeps me outside more often than not. When I’m not designing, I’m usually riding horses, out on the water, or pulling lobster traps off the back of our boat and still finding it slightly remarkable that this is something I get to call a normal afternoon.
I’ve always been drawn to making things. I studied painting before eventually finding my way to design and earning my MFA. But I never really left the artist part behind. If anything, I’ve spent the years since trying to stay as close to it as possible.
These days, that means being part of a ceramics residency here on the island, spending time with artists and makers who work completely differently than I do, and occasionally finding my way back into university classrooms for design critiques. I love being around people who are making things. Talking about why something works, why it doesn’t, why moving one thing half an inch somehow changes everything. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of that.
My career has taken me into some very different rooms. I’ve designed for large companies and established brands, and I’ve sat across from founders with an idea they’re still figuring out how to explain. There’s something I love about both.
Forty 9 grew out of wanting a place for all of those pieces of my life to meet. The artist and the designer. The years of big-brand experience and the part of me that still wants to get my hands dirty and make something from nothing. I love working with people who care about what they’re building. The ones with a story behind it, a point of view, or even just a feeling they haven’t quite figured out how to put into words yet.
That’s usually where the interesting part begins.
